If you have been looking into getting a new TV in the past couple of years, we wouldn’t be surprised if you feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of things to keep an eye out for. There are just so many acronyms and technologies, that it’s almost impossible to decide if you aren’t well versed in them. In this post, I would be talking about TCL's latest TV innovation; QLED and QUHD TVs.
While TCL's biggest audience is unsurprisingly in its homeland of China, it now ships televisions all over the world, with a strong presence in the US, Europe, Australia, and SE Asia. TCL is one of the six largest television manufacturers worldwide, offering affordable yet powerful technology.
The Chinese brand launched in 1981 and transitioned to Australia back in 2004. Its motto is ‘the creative life’, which is reflected by its range of TVs. Amongst its excellent selection, you will find TVs with 4K, HD, 3D and Smart TV capabilities. There are 32 of them in total, ranging in size from a mere 20 inches right up to an almost absurd 85 inches.
They recently started rolling out the new 6-Series R635 models in the US alongside new 5-Series TVs that, for the first time ever, use QLED technology. TCL might be a new name in Nigeria, but this Chinese electronics maker is well recognized globally for its feature-rich and competitively-priced smart televisions.
With a great combination of Roku smart TV software and high quality manufacturing, TCL manages to deliver superb value. TCL operates in the sub-premium section of the market, where it aims to offer really high-quality viewing experiences for the lowest prices around. TCL and Vizio were neck-and-neck at the start, but for the past several years we have given the edge to TCL, due in large part to its Roku interface.
The best TCL TVs combine great value with killer performance. TCL TVs not only offer excellent performance, with picture and sound quality to rival more premium competitors; the TCL brand has also positioned itself as an innovator. Technologies such as THX Game Mode and mini-LED backlighting put TCL TVs at the forefront, delivering high-end touches at extremely reasonable prices.
Now, let's get into what we need to know about TCL's QLED and QUHD TVs.
TCL QLED TVs.
Let's start with the question, what is QLED TV? A QLED TV is a TV that uses a layer of quantum dots between the backlight and LCD display to create additional vibrancy (brightness). Particularly, on high-contrast images, the absolute black particles are able to transform the screen into a mesmerizing display of 4K HD resolution.
Realistically, there are so many advantages to a QLED TV that you will want to take into consideration. These are made possible by the technology built into the device’s system. One thing you should know is that QLED is a type of LCD panel which allows you to get picture quality similar to high-end OLED TVs at a more reasonable price.
The quantum dot filter is a film made up of tiny, crystal, semiconductor particles that manufacturers can control very precisely in terms of color output. This film replaces the “old” RGB filters that older colored TV models used. They are both a lot brighter and more efficient; they are also more effective at light pass-through. This results in more accurate picture colors and a wider color gamut.
A thing to keep in mind is that QLED panels aren’t a significant leap in the world of TVs, and they aren’t a completely new technology. They are however an improvement of conventional LED panels, which is why you can get a QLED TV that’s going to give you an excellent viewing experience at a very reasonable price.
Overall, QLED models are probably going to be the best pick for most users looking to get a TV that offers a lot but is more affordable. Want to learn more about QLED TVs? Check out this article, "QLED TVs Vs OLED TVs". Although QLED TVs have so far been expensive, recent launches from Samsung and One Plus have made this screen tech much more reasonably priced than before. Following in this trend now is TCL.
TCL's top models use QLED displays. Like was mentioned earlier, QLED is shorthand for displays that use quantum-dots and LED backlight to produce brighter and richer color, using nano-scale crystals that react to light by glowing at different wavelengths, literally creating brighter colors in response to a TV's backlight.
Originally popularized by Samsung, QLED displays offer a big improvement over traditional LCD panels, delivering a brighter picture with a wider color gamut. And when paired with a backlight array that has local dimming zones, the same displays offer better contrast and HDR performance. Edging closer to the sort of pixel-perfect lighting you will get with more premium OLED displays.
In late 2019, TCL started selling the 8-Series, the very first QLED TVs powered by a mini-LED backlighting system. Mini-LEDs are tiny when compared to regular LEDs. This means that a QLED TV that could normally accommodate hundreds of LEDs can now accommodate tens of thousands of mini-LEDs. The benefit of this technology is more control over backlighting.
This leads to black levels that come far closer to OLED than any non-OLED display has ever achieved. Now, you should know that not all TCL TVs have QLED enhancement, but it's a feature that's worth paying a little more to get, since it delivers a noticeably better picture.

TCL QUHD TVs.
QUHD TV is a high-end product category launched by TCL in 2016, equipped with top picture quality processing technologies such as Quantum Dot, slim local dimming and HDR, as well as the supreme entertainment technologies integrated with innovative industrial design, high-standard speakers and the TV+OS.
They are TCL's high-end models, and the name indicates a combination of a quantum dot LCD panel, edge-lit LEDs for excellent local dimming, a 4K resolution, and HDR. All QUHD TVs benefit from 4K UHD for incredibly detailed pictures, HDR for vibrant colors bolstered by a decisive contrast, and an Android TV operating system.
In a way, QUHD is “8K” in the sense that it has four times as many pixels as the 2160p 4K UHDTV video standard. Though the name is a bit similar, the QUHD TV is different from the QHD Tv. A QHD screen "Quad High Definition" has 2560x1440 pixels. This is four times higher than a standard high definition (HD) TV or monitor, which is 1280x760 pixels. When it comes to QHD resolution, a screen will have 3.7 million pixels on it.
As a new generation of TV products to lead the trends of the industry, QUHD TV has specially employed slim local dimming technology to reduce the optical distance to 5mm which makes Xclusive (X1) the world’s thinnest local dimming quantum dot TV. Besides, under the concept of all-in-one design, TCL allows the back cover to have a quite clean surface without any screw or gap.
The TCL QUHD TV Series brings together the ultimate picture quality experience, high sound quality, Nordic design and powerful audio and video system to create an upscale TV experience. By integrating groundbreaking HDR display technology and QUHD resolution and display features, the TV delivers a wide color gamut for more realistic colors, brighter highlights and increased light-to-dark contrast.
TCL’s QUHD TVs are equipped with an Ultra-thin Screen, a black crystal panel, intelligent display process engine and HIFI speaker, so viewers can not only enjoy the latest images with increased details and realistic clarity, but also enjoy an exciting audio effect and a precise full-range representation of sound.
